Time for some perspective… Earth is estimated to be 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years old. The first human like creatures appeared only circa 300,000 years ago. ⏳️

For the most part of our existence, humans have therefore been living through a world of deep ice ages and interglacial warmings, which has meant we lived largely nomadic lives, never settling in one place for too long. ?

However, in just the last 10,000 years, Earth has entered into a remarkably stable period in terms of average global temperature??? termed the Holocene. Humans could rely on the predictability of the climate and resulting weather patterns and seasons to begin farming ?, settle in one area, and build communities that, in turn, created cultures and handed knowledge down from one generation to the next to create  modern civilizations?. From the Egyptians to the Incas to the Middle Ages, to the Modern Age ?.

However, thanks to human induced global warming ? and the resulting climate change, we have now left the Holocene and therefore left the remarkably stable period in Earth’s history that nurtured human civilizations ⚖️. We have now entered a new period called the Anthropocene.

What comes next, therefore, is to some extent predictable and yet totally unpredictable and therefore threatens the very foundations upon which everything we have built up exists and we take for granted. It threatens our species’s ability to thrive and flourish. It threatens our ability to build and maintain civilizations ? In summary, what we think of as so unshakeable and enduring as modern civilization has only been in existence for a relatively short period of time, and the basis upon which it was built (a predictable and benign climate) is fast disappearing.

This is why urgent action is required to reduce carbon emissions – we are tipping our finely balanced climate into an unstable and unpredictable climate upon which only chaos and suffering will result… ☠️
